Artist statement

George Pinder is a young contemporary artist born in 1998, Leeds, United Kingdom. His work ranges in influence from Neo-expressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism and characteristics inspired by the Romantics. Through studying Fine Art at college and progressing to complete a BA in Fine Art, he has developed a style that intends to reflect his playful nature when producing his compositions.

Music plays a central role for inspiration. He uses varieties of sounds as a vehicle to create painted compositions, considering emotional responses that have helped create his abstract work and also the work that concentrates more on figuration and body movement. He uses lyrics that resonate with him to help construct compositions that are a direct response to what he hears. Growing up in an inner city, urban life is something that he considers a part on his DNA as an artist. Rap music has played a large role in his personal character, this expanded into his creative process where he intends on marrying his art practice with the art form of rap, often as a celebration of the fast-growing culture.

Colour, figuration, emotion and popular culture are all aspects that are present throughout his body of work. George explores the possibilities of mark making using a variety of paints, oil sticks and spray to accomplish works that have different surface textures. Being influenced by urban culture, street art is something that has inspired his work; intending on reflecting this influence in the work, combining traditional painting with street art. This is done as a way to include his personal identity in the work he produces, resulting in honest compositions, that represent his own identity. His practice has expanded into using photography and digital design to compose artworks that are often interpretations of music videos, believing that aesthetically they capture the essence of the sound and performance element of music. His playful style means that his work takes a varieties of forms that are constantly being expanded on and resolved in his studio located in Yorkshire.
